About White Plains, New York

The White PLains population experienced a growth spurt since 2000, and since that time, high-end apartment towers have been constructed. The new City Place development, features two skyscrapers with commanding views of the lower Hudson Valley. Because of White Plains close proximity to New York, the cost of living in White Plains has been ranked as second most expensive in the nation to New York City.

White Plains, located just outside of New York City, dates to the colonial period since the mid-1980s.White Plains was settled by Puritans from Connecticut in 1683. It became a village in 1866 and as a city 1916. The city has light industries and serves as the headquarters for several corporations and laboratories. The city is the site of a cultural county center, a branch of Pace University, and the New York School for the Deaf.

A multi-tiered transportation system gets travelers around the community, and into the surrounding area, and serves as a gateway to upstate New York, New England and beyond.

Accommodations
The Renaissance Westchester Hotel offers upscale accommodations on 30 acres of New York countryside. The hotel is located approximately six and a half miles from the White Plains airport and 30-40 miles from New York city airports. Summerfield Suites is located approximately 25 miles from Manhattan and 24 miles from LaGuardia International Airport.

Restaurants
An excellent Italian restaurant, Mulino's offers tasteful decor and an ambience that is warm and romantic. Dooley Mac's is a friendly Irish public serves great food and features bands. The Morton’s Steakhouse is an upscale eatery featuring steak and seafood.

Shopping
The Galleria at White Plains is a collection of shops and services that can be found on Main Street. While shopping in downtown White Plains, the Renaissance Plaza business district is home to a fountain that runs 48,000 gallons of recycled water through over 100 jets and spouts.

Major Attractions
Miller House was built by the Miller family, and is said to have been used by George Washington during the 1776 Battle of White Plains.

The Fort Hill Players local theatre troupe performs regularly, in addition to several of the city's parks during the summer. The White Plains Performing Arts Center features a variety of stage productions throughout the year.
